Register for an FCC FRN
Before taking the exam, you need a Federal Registration Number (FRN) from the FCC. You can register for free on the FCC CORES website. It takes only 5 minutes.
Study Mode for Exam
We recommend using HamStudy.org to study with; you can sign up for a COMPLETELY FREE account. We recommend you see 90-95% of the material with the last 4 practice exams at 85% or better.
Take Practice Exams
You should avoid practice exams in the beginning and stay in Study Mode till you have seen 90-95% or more of the material. Your last 4 practice exams should be 85% or better before taking your exam. The passing score is 74%, but this gives you confidence going into the test and makes passing almost certain. Very few people who follow this guideline fail the exam.

You may take more than one exam per session. One exam fee covers the next-level test if you decide to go for the next level up in the same session! However, if you fail and want to attempt the test again, you will need to pay another exam fee. Please let us know when you register if you plan to take more than one exam so that we can plan for the time appropriately. (Please note we will not allow the additional test if you have not sufficiently studied for it). You can always go to Hamstudy.org to take a practice test, as they will be nearly identical, to see what kinda of questions will be asked.
Youth Applicants
- If you are under 13 years old, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires that a parent or legal guardian complete a COPPA form.
- A parent or legal guardian and the minor must give their consent for the session to be recorded.
